JetBlue Pilot Reports Mid-Air Collision with Drone During JFK Airport Approach

Air traffic control audio has captured a JetBlue pilot reporting a potential drone strike earlier this week as the aircraft was on its final approach to John F. Kennedy International Airport (JFK).

The incident involved JetBlue Flight 948, which had originated from Harry Reid International Airport in Las Vegas, according to details provided by the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA).

During the approach, a pilot from Flight 948 communicated with air traffic controllers, stating,

"We collided with a drone back there in the turn."

The controller sought clarification, asking,

"You said you collided?"

The pilot confirmed the collision, adding that the drone was

"right above the cockpit."

Incident Details Emerge

The reported encounter occurred approximately 10 to 12 miles from JFK, at an altitude of roughly 3,000 feet, as the aircraft began its final approach sequence. The pilot pinpointed the location as being near the ASALT waypoint, a standard navigational reference point where aircraft typically align for landing.

The pilot further elaborated on the precise timing and location, explaining,

"It was as we were making the turn to ASALT, so about 10 miles to 12 miles outside of ASALT. We were coming over that part of land in New Jersey."

Air traffic control inquired if the crew required any assistance following the reported incident, but the flight crew declined.

"We don't need any assistance, we're just going to go ahead and land,"

the pilot stated.

The exchange concluded with the controller acknowledging the message, saying,

"Roger, thank you."

The pilot then added,

"Sorry, I couldn't give you any more details than that."

Investigation Underway

Despite the report, JetBlue confirmed that the flight landed safely, and all passengers deplaned without any issues. A subsequent post-flight inspection of the aircraft also revealed no damage, according to officials.

The FAA has announced that it will conduct an investigation into the reported incident.
