Connecticut Officers Wounded, Suspect Killed Following Chase and Shootout Near Hartford

Two law enforcement officers in Connecticut sustained gunshot wounds, and a suspect was fatally shot, after an attempted apprehension escalated into a vehicle pursuit and an exchange of gunfire late Friday evening near Hartford, according to authorities.

Incident Unfolds

The incident began around 11:07 p.m. when Hartford police officers were investigating what their department characterized as illicit activity. During this investigation, a male suspect fled the scene on foot.

An officer gave chase and attempted to take the individual into custody. During a physical struggle, the officer perceived what felt like a firearm in the suspect's waistband, as reported by the Hartford Police Department.

The suspect then managed to enter a vehicle and drive away, initiating a police pursuit through the city. Information regarding the fleeing vehicle was simultaneously relayed to surrounding police agencies.

The pursuit eventually led to Webster Court in Newington, a community located south of Hartford and near the Rocky Hill town line.

Upon the suspect exiting the vehicle, a shootout ensued. This confrontation resulted in injuries to two officers and the death of the suspect, police confirmed.

The officers injured in the incident were identified as Officer Alex Diaz of the Hartford Police Department and Officer Jon Escobar of the Rocky Hill Police Department.

Both officers received medical attention at a hospital following the shooting and have since been discharged, local authorities stated.

Hartford police announced that Officer Diaz was released from the hospital on Saturday and is currently recuperating at home.

Ongoing Investigations

Authorities have not yet publicly identified the deceased suspect nor have they disclosed further specifics regarding the illegal activity Hartford officers were initially investigating prior to the attempted arrest.

The exact circumstances surrounding the exchange of gunfire, including which officers discharged their weapons, remain under active investigation.
