Chicago Sees Weekend of Gun Violence With 3 Fatalities and 15 Shot, Days After New Office Established

Chicago experienced a weekend marked by significant gun violence, with three individuals losing their lives and fifteen others sustaining injuries across multiple shooting incidents. The victims' ages ranged from 17 to 57 during the three-day period of unrest.

New Office Formed Amid Ongoing Violence

The recent wave of violence follows closely on the heels of Mayor Brandon Johnson's signing of an executive order last Thursday. This order officially established the "Office of Gun Violence Reduction," an initiative designed to address the persistent issue of gun-related crime in the city.

Mayor Johnson emphasized his administration's commitment to public safety, stating:

"From day one in office, my number one priority has been driving down violence and breaking the cycles of trauma and despair which have disrupted the lives of countless Chicagoans—with this executive order we are bringing together every tool at our disposal to save lives and build safer communities."

Tragically, less than two hours after the executive order was formalized, Chicago police responded to a fatal shooting. Authorities reported that two individuals were killed after an unidentified suspect opened fire. This incident remains under investigation.

According to police accounts, "Two male victims were discovered in the rear of a residence with multiple gunshot wounds to the body."

Comparing Recent Incidents

While the past weekend saw a notable level of violence, the number of fatalities was slightly lower than the preceding Juneteenth holiday weekend. During that earlier period, six people were killed and dozens more were injured as gunfire erupted throughout Chicago.
