However, historical accounts suggest his riches were hidden much closer to home: on a secluded island nestled within the opulent Hamptons region of Long Island, New York. Historian Daphne Palmer Geanacopoulos, author of "A Pirate's Wife: The Remarkable True Story of Sarah Kidd," describes Captain Kidd and his spouse, Sarah, as "New York's power couple." She further elaborated on his standing, stating, "He was a very, very stellar member of New York society. He owned a great deal of real estate. They had dinner parties. They had silver. They had china and fine linens."

This portrayal starkly contrasts with popular pirate lore. Geanacopoulos noted the common perception: "It's easy to believe the lore of pirates because people find it kind of sexy. You know, these are really hyper-masculine men who are out there, swinging swords and cutting people to pieces and coming around with bags of gold. And that's kind of like, you know, dashing and dark and it's all of that." Yet, she emphasizes that Kidd was, in essence, "a normal guy."

The Treasure's Hiding Place

The fabled treasure, said to consist of approximately 40 pounds of gold, silver, silk, and invaluable rubies and other precious stones, found its primary resting place on Gardiner's Island. This information comes from Samuel Marquis, author of "Captain Kidd: A True Story of Treasure and Betrayal," who also holds a unique connection to the pirate as his ninth great-grandson. Marquis confirmed, "He hides the treasure on Gardiner’s Island."

Gardiner's Island, a privately owned estate off New York's Long Island, has remained in the possession of the same family since Captain Kidd reportedly concealed his bounty there centuries ago. Marquis notes that Kidd is believed to have cached other valuables in various locations, including parts of Connecticut and Rhode Island, with New Jersey also considered a potential hiding spot.

The story of Captain Kidd challenges conventional notions of piracy, revealing a figure deeply embedded in colonial New York society whose extraordinary wealth was hidden in an equally extraordinary location.
