Progressive Activist William Lawrence Secures Democratic Nomination in Key Michigan Congressional Race

A co-founder of the progressive Sunrise Movement achieved a significant victory in the Democratic primary on Tuesday night, overcoming two candidates with more traditional party backing in a closely watched Michigan race.

William Lawrence secured the Democratic nomination for Michigan's 7th Congressional District, which encompasses Lansing, by defeating former U.S. ambassador to Ukraine Bridget Brink and former Navy SEAL Matt Maasdam.

Lawrence is now set to contend against Republican Representative Tom Barrett in November. Barrett, a military veteran, is seeking his second term in Congress and ran unopposed in the Republican primary. He initially won the seat in an open contest in 2024, after Democrat Elissa Slotkin vacated it to successfully run for the Senate.

A Significant Win for the Progressive Wing

Lawrence's triumph is being viewed as a substantial development in the ongoing ideological debates within the Democratic Party nationwide.

While the Democratic Socialists of America (DSA) did not officially endorse a candidate in this particular race, Lawrence garnered support from prominent progressive figures. These endorsements included Michigan's own Representative Rashida Tlaib, a notable DSA member known for her outspoken views, and Senator Bernie Sanders of Vermont, who identifies as a democratic socialist.

The Sunrise Movement's Evolution and Policy Stance

The Sunrise Movement, which Lawrence helped establish in 2017, initially gained prominence as a youth-led climate advocacy organization. It played a key role in promoting the Green New Deal alongside progressive lawmakers in Congress.

Over time, the organization's policy agenda has expanded beyond climate issues. Its official website outlines additional calls to action, such as removing Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) operations from U.S. cities and advocating for the abolition of police departments.

For Republicans, who are facing a challenging national landscape in their efforts to maintain control of the House of Representatives, Lawrence's primary win is likely perceived as a favorable outcome.
