Todd Blanche Confirmed as Attorney General After Contentious Senate Vote

Todd Blanche, President Donald Trump’s selection to lead the Department of Justice, has successfully navigated the Senate confirmation process and is now poised to assume the role of the country's chief law enforcement officer. His confirmation came through in the early hours of Saturday morning as lawmakers concluded their legislative session in Washington, D.C. Blanche will officially succeed Pam Bondi as the Attorney General.

Blanche, who previously served as President Trump’s personal attorney, faced significant challenges to his confirmation. Republican senators grappled with his involvement in establishing a nearly $2 billion anti-weaponization initiative and providing broad IRS audit immunity for the president and his family, which nearly jeopardized his prospects.

Crucial Support Emerges Amidst Doubts

Despite the initial uncertainty, Senator Bill Cassidy, a Republican from Louisiana, emerged as a last-minute supporter. On Friday, he announced his decision to back Blanche’s confirmation after several days of withholding his stance.

Senator Cassidy acknowledged his apprehensions regarding the potential for weaponization within the Department of Justice and the enforceability of any agreement to discontinue the anti-weaponization fund or restrict Trump’s audit immunity. However, he ultimately argued that having a Senate-confirmed attorney general was preferable to leaving the position with an acting official.

"Mr. Blanche is not perfect, and he will tell you this," Cassidy stated on the Senate floor. "But the choice is not between perfection and Mr. Blanche. It is between Mr. Blanche and another acting attorney general, who may not run the department effectively under President Trump."

Republican Senators Oppose Confirmation

Despite securing enough votes, Blanche’s confirmation was not unanimous among Republicans. Senators Lisa Murkowski of Alaska and Susan Collins of Maine joined all Senate Democrats in opposing his appointment.

Senator Murkowski declared her opposition hours before Senator Cassidy’s announcement of support. She explained that despite Blanche’s visit to Alaska and numerous discussions, she could not endorse him for the position of Attorney General.

Her concerns centered on his connection to the anti-weaponization fund, the broader issue of a potentially politicized Justice Department, Blanche’s involvement in the release of the Epstein Files, and uncertainties surrounding the fund itself. Several Republicans had previously voiced worries about whether taxpayer funds from this initiative could be directed towards individuals involved in the January 6, 2021, events at the Capitol.

"The country needs an Attorney General who will check the worst impulses of this administration," Murkowski asserted. "I hope Mr. Blanche is able to achieve that, if confirmed, but I simply do not have confidence that will be the case."

Senator Collins had previously articulated similar reservations earlier in the week, becoming the first Republican to publicly express skepticism about Blanche’s chances for confirmation.

"While I believe Mr. Blanche is a capable lawyer, the Department of Justice has become increasingly political," Collins commented. "Mr. Blanche has taken several actions that have further eroded the Department’s independence, and that is the basis for my vote to oppose his confirmation."
