The United States Men's National Soccer Team concluded its Group D campaign with a 3-2 defeat against Türkiye, as Kaan Ayhan netted the decisive goal in the final seconds, delivering a late blow to the host nation's side.
Crucially, this result had no bearing on the United States' progression in the FIFA World Cup. Their qualification for the knockout stage was already confirmed prior to the match.
Despite their secured advancement, Team USA aimed to build momentum heading into the Round of 32 next week and to achieve a historic milestone as the first U.S. team to win three World Cup matches. Instead, the match in Los Angeles ended with a touch of disappointment.
Conversely, Türkiye, who had experienced a challenging tournament, departed on a high note, celebrating a hard-fought victory against a U.S. squad that featured nine changes to its starting lineup. Head coach Mauricio Pochettino rotated players to ensure key individuals remained fresh for the upcoming knockout stage.
Early Goals and Shifting Momentum
The atmosphere in Inglewood, California, was electric from the start, with the crowd roaring during the national anthem. Just three minutes into the match, Auston Trusty ignited the sold-out stadium at Los Angeles Stadium, powerfully converting a corner kick delivered by Sebastian Berhalter. Trusty sprinted towards the U.S. bench, met with jubilant cheers from the fans.
However, Türkiye, despite being eliminated from the tournament, demonstrated they were not willing to concede easily. Only seven minutes later, Arda Güler, the 21-year-old Real Madrid star, capitalized on a lapse in U.S. defensive coverage, firing a shot past Matt Turner, who had replaced Matt Freese in goal, to level the score at one apiece.
The game evolved into a physical contest, with the U.S. clearly indicating the match's significance as they pursued their record-setting third World Cup victory. Türkiye, meanwhile, played with evident pride, determined to leave their mark.
Pulisic's Return Sparks Equalizer
It was Türkiye who broke the deadlock once more. Orkun Kökçü found himself with a clear opportunity directly in front of goal, following excellent passing around the U.S. penalty area. He calmly tapped the ball in, momentarily quieting the home crowd as Türkiye took the lead.
Türkiye maintained their advantage as the first half concluded. However, the introduction of
