Stephen A. Smith Critiques WNBA Coach Cheryl Reeve Over "Trans Kids Belong" T-Shirt Controversy
Prominent sports commentator Stephen A. Smith voiced strong criticism regarding Minnesota Lynx coach Cheryl Reeve's decision to wear a "Trans Kids Belong" T-shirt, asserting it harmed the WNBA.

Sports analyst Stephen A. Smith recently directed sharp criticism towards Minnesota Lynx head coach Cheryl Reeve following her decision to wear a "Trans Kids Belong" T-shirt on the bench. Smith contended that Reeve's actions amounted to an activist display that could negatively impact the WNBA.
Reeve chose to wear the shirt during her team's initial game against the Indiana Fever, whose guard, Sophie Cunningham, had previously vocalized support for women-only sports competitions. This situation ignited a broader debate, with some expressing concern over the "erasure" of trans rights and others emphasizing the importance of preserving fairness and safety in women's athletics.
The timing of Reeve's statement, made on a prominent WNBA regular-season stage, was not viewed as coincidental by Smith.
"And then you're going to come out with a T-shirt. No regard for the WNBA. No regard for the sponsors that may be put off by that. No regard for the bottom line that might be affected," Smith stated emphatically. "It's just an accidental coincidence that that's the game you chose to wear that? Oh, THIS IS THE B.S.! IT'S THE SELFISHNESS! IT'S PUTTING YOURSELF BEFORE THE BETTERMENT OF THE WHOLE!"
Critiquing a Coach's Responsibility
Smith questioned the appropriateness of Reeve's actions, particularly given her role as a coach in women's basketball.
"You are Cheryl Reeve, the head coach of the Minnesota Lynx. That is an irresponsible thing to do," Smith argued. "You are a coach for a female basketball team. Do you not think that females are being screwed over if they have to compete against an individual born as a male? What are you talking about?"
The commentator highlighted that while athletes like Sophie Cunningham take public scrutiny for their positions, influential figures such as Reeve use their platform to promote an opposing viewpoint, potentially jeopardizing fan engagement and sponsor relationships crucial for the WNBA's growth.
The Broader Discussion on Fairness in Sports
Smith drew parallels between Cunningham's stance and that of former collegiate swimmer Riley Gaines, who has also advocated for the protection of women's sports categories. He challenged Reeve to consider the implications of her position.
"That's what Sophie Cunningham was talking about. That's what Riley Gaines is talking about. How would you, coach Cheryl Reeve, condone that?" Smith asked. "If you're a male and transitioning to female, you shouldn't be playing against the women. Nobody said you can't transition... The issue here is competing against women."
Support rallies for Cunningham's perspective have already been organized in WNBA cities like Minnesota and Seattle, with another event planned ahead of the Fever's upcoming game against the New York Liberty.
Balancing Empathy with Athletic Integrity
Smith emphasized that the conversation does not require a conflict between empathy and common sense. He extended a message to transgender athletes, suggesting that public sentiment is not necessarily against them as individuals.
"To the trans athletes out there: people are not against you, like some people may lead you to believe," Smith explained. "There are a lot of people who are empathetic and sympathetic to the challenges that you face... and want you to live your best life.
"But it can't be at the expense of young ladies born as girls, raised as girls, evolving into women ... You don't have the right to impede upon women's sports."
The overarching sentiment conveyed was that for the WNBA to safeguard its expanding enterprise, it must prioritize the protection of the female athletes who form its foundation and who are meant to inspire future generations, rather than allowing individual activist statements to detract from this core mission.
