Stephen A. Smith Praises Byron Donalds, Suggests Florida Republican Could Sway His Political Affiliation

ESPN personality Stephen A. Smith indicated on Thursday that Representative Byron Donalds, a Republican from Florida, possesses the qualities that could lead him to embrace the Republican party. Smith's commendation of the congressman, who is a leading contender backed by former President Trump in the upcoming Florida gubernatorial primary, came just days before Republicans in the state are set to select their nominee to succeed Governor Ron DeSantis.

Smith, known for his outspoken commentary, stated, "And I ain't no d--- Republican. But that mean if anybody could make me one, it would be him. I'm just going to keep it a buck. I'm just letting you know."

Praise for Donalds' Tenacity and Knowledge

Smith lauded Donalds, describing him as "the real deal." He elaborated on his observations of the congressman, noting, "Make no mistake about it. I've seen him battling with Democrats. I've seen him battling with people on different shows, whatever. He ain't backing up. He knows his stuff. OK? I talk to him all the time. All the time. And I ain't got nothing bad to say about him."

A spokesperson for Donalds' campaign, Erin McGavick, commented on the broad appeal of the representative. McGavick said, "Byron Donalds is drawing support from Floridians of all backgrounds because he has a clear vision to make Florida more affordable, keep Floridians safe and make sure the radical left stays out of the Sunshine State. He is building a broad coalition that puts common sense over crazy to lead Florida into the future."

An unnamed source familiar with the campaign's dynamics also expressed confidence in Donalds' prospects, stating, "Donalds is endorsed by POTUS, and we fully expect him to win the primary."

Gubernatorial Race Dynamics

Recent polling data from the James Madison Institute, released on August 6, positioned Donalds significantly ahead in the Republican primary. The survey showed Donalds garnering 49% support among likely Republican primary voters, which placed him 31 percentage points ahead of Lieutenant Governor Jay Collins.

Donalds' campaign has demonstrated substantial financial strength, having accumulated over $90 million in fundraising. He is competing against Collins, former Florida House Speaker Paul Renner, and investor James Fishback. Notably, incumbent Governor Ron DeSantis has not issued an endorsement for any candidate in the primary race.

Smith's Evolving Political Stance

During his discussion with Donalds, Smith pressed the congressman on the perceived distrust of former President Trump among Black voters and concerns about Donalds' close association with the former president. Smith also openly shared his own skepticism toward the Democratic Party.

"You heard me ask that question [What have Democrats done for you?]. I ain't apologizing for it. I'm very skeptical about them," Smith stated. He further added, "Make no mistake about it. I mean, I've lost interest in them in a lot of different ways. I'll be the first to admit it right here on the public airwaves, but I also am trying to be fair-minded when I think about this."

These remarks align with Smith's increasingly public willingness to consider Republican candidates. In March, he challenged Democrats to actively earn the votes of Black Americans rather than assuming their support. Days later, in an appearance on Sean Hannity's program, Smith, despite identifying as a Democrat, stated he would back Secretary of State Marco Rubio over prominent Democratic figures like California Governor Gavin Newsom and former Vice President Kamala Harris.

Donalds on Voter Verification

"It's something that I acknowledge. I would challenge Black people in America. First of all, this ain't even about trust. It's about verification," Donalds asserted. "We've had people on both sides of the aisle promise Black people everything until the cows come home. But it's really about, 'Are you going to verify the promises and verify what the policies actually do, or are you just going to trust it because you have comfort level with a certain politician.'"

Governor DeSantis, who secured a decisive re-election victory in 2022, is constitutionally barred from seeking a third term. Over the past decade, Florida has transformed from a closely contested swing state into one predominantly controlled by Republicans at both the state and national levels.
