Socialist-Backed Candidates Secure Primary Wins in New York, Pelosi and Omar Decline Comment

Three congressional candidates endorsed by New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani achieved significant victories in their recent Democratic primary elections, underscoring the expanding influence of the socialist movement within the party. This development prompted former House Speaker Rep. Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., and Rep. Ilhan Omar, D-Minn., to refrain from answering inquiries regarding the implications of these wins.

Mayor Mamdani’s political sway was clearly demonstrated on Tuesday night as all three candidates he supported — Darializa Avila Chevalier, Brad Lander, and Claire Valdez — successfully secured their Democratic nominations in New York, triumphing over more centrist Democratic contenders.

Pelosi's Past Stance on Socialism

While the California congresswoman, now in her 20th term, did not formally endorse Mamdani, she has previously supported a socialist candidate in 2024: Dean Preston for California’s District 5 supervisor. However, her historical position on socialism as a broader economic framework has been one of rejection.

In a 2019 interview with CBS’s 60 Minutes, Pelosi explicitly stated her opposition to socialism as an economic system and as a comprehensive representation of the Democratic Party's ideology.

"If people have that view, that's their view," Pelosi remarked in the interview. "That is not the view of the Democratic Party."

Omar's Progressive Affiliations

Rep. Omar, a key member of the progressive "Squad" in Congress, also chose not to address questions concerning the New York primary results. This included inquiries about how the potential election of these three socialist-aligned candidates to Congress might affect the legislative priorities of House Democrats and Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries.

Although Omar has not officially identified as a socialist, she has consistently championed numerous policies often associated with socialist principles and has received backing from organizations such as the Democratic Socialists of America.

Rep. Johnson Welcomes New Lawmakers

In contrast to the silence from Pelosi and Omar, Rep. Hank Johnson, D-Ga., openly welcomed the newly nominated lawmakers. When questioned about the criticism these three candidates have directed towards Israel, Johnson offered a distinction, suggesting their opposition was aimed at the Israeli government rather than the nation itself.

"They were not anti-Israel. They were anti-Israeli government," Johnson stated. "The government of Benjamin Netanyahu has done a grave disservice to the nation of Israel and to its people."

Brad Lander, one of the primary winners, who is Jewish, echoed this sentiment in his victory speech, emphasizing the distinction between criticizing a government and holding antisemitic views.

"You can criticize Israel and not be antisemitic. You can be an anti-Zionist and not be antisemitic," Lander declared.

All three successful primary candidates have voiced strong criticism regarding Israel’s military actions in Gaza, making this issue a significant point of divergence within the Democratic Party's progressive faction.

Critique of Netanyahu and Trump

Johnson further extended his critique to include Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s relationship with former President Donald Trump. He condemned what he described as their involvement in instigating a "war with Iran."

"The people there will have an opportunity to correct the mistake that they made," Johnson commented. "The same way that the people of America have the opportunity to correct this mistake that we made in electing Donald Trump, who unfortunately got manipulated into war by Benjamin Netanyahu."

He concluded by emphasizing public sentiment against military conflict:

"People don't like this war, and they don't like Israeli government policy that put us into this war."
