Scott Eastwood recently offered an inside look into a memorable on-set interaction involving his father, legendary filmmaker Clint Eastwood, and actor Kevin Costner. Speaking on a podcast, the younger Eastwood recounted a specific instance that highlighted his father's firm approach to directing.
A Director's Firm Hand on Set
Scott, 40, emphasized the deep respect his father commands on a film set, noting that Clint Eastwood maintained control without ever raising his voice. He then shared what he called a "legendary story," though he prefaced it by admitting he might slightly misremember or paraphrase details. The anecdote centered on the production of the 1993 film "A Perfect World," a crime drama starring both Clint Eastwood and Costner.
According to Scott, Kevin Costner, who was experiencing a significant rise in fame at the time, might have developed a "big ego." This reputedly led to an incident where Costner reportedly refused to exit his trailer for an unknown reason. Clint Eastwood, who was both directing and starring in the movie, responded decisively when informed of the situation. Despite Costner being scheduled for the scene that day, Clint instructed:
"Well send him home then."
Scott elaborated on the crew's interaction with Costner. "Hey, you're going to go home for the day," they reportedly told the actor. When Costner questioned, "What do you mean I'm in the scene?", the response was clear: "Well, I guess you're not anymore. Clint changed that." Scott noted the swift impact of this decision, stating that Costner was "on set ready to go" the very next day.
In "A Perfect World," Costner portrays an escaped convict who takes a young child hostage, while Clint Eastwood plays a Texas Ranger pursuing them.
Lessons from a Hollywood Upbringing
Beyond this specific incident, Scott Eastwood has frequently spoken about how growing up with a prominent figure like his father shaped his own professional conduct and work ethic in the entertainment industry. He observed "shocking" behaviors within the business from a young age.
He reflected on these observations during a June appearance on another podcast, stating that he felt fortunate to witness "how it's bulls---" early on. While he got glimpses of negative conduct during his childhood visits to his father's sets, the actor affirmed that his father "did a really good job of protecting" him and his siblings from the common pitfalls associated with early stardom.
This discussion arose while he and the host were contemplating the challenges faced by child actors who achieve fame prematurely, suggesting that such early success can lead to "stunted in your growth." Scott praised his father's efforts in this regard.
"I mean, kudos to my dad, [be]cause he did a really good job of protecting us from that and very private," he stated.
He further explained that their upbringing was deliberately kept away from the Hollywood spotlight. "We didn't live in LA, we lived in Carmel. It was a very...as normal as it could be, in the sense that he was like, 'No, you just you need to be a normal child and learn how the world works.'"
