For many years, Sammy "The Bull" Gravano adhered strictly to the Mafia's code of unwavering loyalty. Gravano recounted the planned narrative: "They're going to turn around, including your lawyer, and say to the jurors, 'You heard the tapes. Sammy's a monster. Killed all these people, took over the businesses and everything. Poor John Gotti. You hear him complaining on the tape. It's not him. It's him,'" he stated.

Gravano characterized this defense strategy as a manifestation of a fundamental principle within the Mafia: "The boss must go free." This tenet, he noted, often meant designating another individual as the scapegoat to ensure the leader's exoneration. Following this revelation about the defense's approach, Gravano stated that he definitively decided to cooperate with the government.

"I find this out way later, so it's not the reason I cooperated – but I find out later he's going to take me out," Gravano revealed. It's crazy."
