A potentially lucrative contract extension for NFL receiver Puka Nacua is now facing uncertainty following new allegations of abuse and neglect, which have surfaced as the league scrutinizes his conduct.
Allegations from Former Partner
Hallie Aiono, Nacua’s ex-girlfriend and the mother of his child, has recently brought forth accusations of abuse and neglect during their four-year relationship. Aiono initially shared these claims in a social media video, which was subsequently removed.
"I went from loving somebody so deeply for four years, I felt it in my bones, to experiencing extreme betrayal, abuse, complete neglect from them, in what felt like it happened almost overnight," Aiono stated.
She emphasized that the private struggles had been more damaging than any public disagreements they experienced.
"A lot of the things that were public affected my mental health," Aiono explained. "But honestly, the things that were happening in private are what completely crushed me and altered my brain chemistry. Those parts, what people never saw or knew of, are what broke me."
Civil Lawsuit and Defense
These latest allegations compound a challenging offseason for Nacua, who impressed last season by leading the NFL with 129 receptions and accumulating 1,715 receiving yards. In March, he was named in a civil lawsuit initiated by Madison Atiabi, stemming from an incident at a New Year’s Eve party.
The legal filing alleges that Nacua bit Atiabi’s shoulder, bit another woman’s thumb, and directed an antisemitic slur at a guest during the event. However, Nacua’s attorney, Levi McCathern, has vehemently denied these accusations, characterizing the lawsuit as an attempt at extortion.
"Puka denies these allegations in the strongest possible terms," McCathern asserted. "Our office was contacted with demands of millions of dollars in exchange for not publicizing these allegations. This is not a legitimate claim. It is blackmail."
McCathern also refuted the claim of an antisemitic slur, stating that a "completely sober witness" confirmed Nacua did not make such comments. The attorney described the alleged biting incidents as "horseplay."
Before Atiabi’s allegations became public, Nacua voluntarily entered a rehabilitation facility in Los Angeles in early March. His attorney clarified that this program was undertaken to support his personal development and growth.
Contract Negotiations and League Review
The accumulation of these off-field issues is now impacting Nacua’s contract discussions. He recently engaged WIN Sports Group to manage negotiations for a new deal. Nevertheless, reports indicate that his team does not anticipate offering him an extension before the upcoming season. The organization appears to be waiting for greater clarity regarding his legal situation and evidence of sustained personal improvement before committing to a top-tier financial package.
Concurrently, the NFL is conducting its own review of Nacua’s conduct under its Personal Conduct Policy. This policy grants the league authority to impose disciplinary actions on players, even in the absence of formal criminal charges.
While Nacua's impressive on-field performance provides him with significant leverage, the unresolved allegations and the potential for a league suspension present considerable obstacles for his team in finalizing a $150 million commitment.
