A leading Democratic strategist, who previously served in a senior advisory role during the Obama administration, has publicly questioned the recent remarks made by Senator Jon Ossoff concerning former President Donald Trump's executive assistant, Natalie Harp, labeling the specific comment as 'gratuitous and unnecessary.'
Senator Ossoff, a Georgia Democrat, has been actively campaigning for re-election, a period during which his public profile has notably expanded, positioning him as a potential figure in the 2028 presidential conversation. His recent statements targeting Trump gained significant online traction.
During a campaign appearance, Ossoff criticized Trump regarding a conflict in Iran and the extensive deployment of the USS Abraham Lincoln in the Middle East. He then shifted his focus to Harp, Trump's executive assistant.
While the sailors on the Lincoln fight his war, while he fruitlessly drains our munitions and oil reserves, the president sleeps through his meetings. He golfs and trades stocks,Ossoff stated.
So, he doesn’t want to do the job. He wants to build his ballroom and travel with Natalie on their apparently defenseless flying palace gifted by the Emir of Qatar.
Controversial Remarks Spark Debate
This particular comment drew immediate criticism from Trump, his associates, family members, and Ossoff's Republican opponent, Representative Mike Collins of Georgia.
The remarks also prompted a reaction from David Axelrod, a significant figure in the Democratic Party who was instrumental in former President Barack Obama's two successful presidential campaigns and served as his senior advisor.
While Axelrod acknowledged Ossoff's past 'eloquent or incisive' critiques of Trump, he suggested that the inclusion of Harp's name might have been unwarranted.
The paragraph from his weekend speech that has gotten so much attention was a brutal takedown,Axelrod posted on X.
But two words in it, ‘with Natalie,’ seemed gratuitous and unnecessary.
Axelrod speculated that Ossoff's campaign likely amplified the clip's virality, which has garnered over 6 million views on X. He suggested this move 'probably thrilled some in the base, who figured it was just giving Trump a taste of his own nasty medicine.'
But they distracted and detracted from the power of the message,Axelrod contended.
Representative Collins echoed these sentiments, expressing strong disapproval.
It's disgusting that he would attack a young female staffer just to score cheap political points with his radical activist base,Collins asserted.
It's unbecoming of a U.S. senator, and the fact prominent Democrats are starting to call him out just proves it.
Ossoff Defends Stance Amid Criticism
However, not all notable Democratic social media personalities agreed with Axelrod's assessment. Joanne Carducci, widely known as Jojofromjerz online, countered that Axelrod was '100% wrong,' praising Ossoff's mention of Harp as 'genius.'
The political world has changed since you were a player in it, and if we continue to operate under the antiquated rules of the past, we’ll keep losing, she argued on X.
Ossoff, for his part, appears to be embracing the White House's reaction, which included Trump referring to him as a 'Pee-wee Herman look-alike.' Trump also defended the construction of a ballroom at the White House, a project that has previously faced scrutiny from lawmakers on both sides of the aisle.
During an appearance on MS NOW, Ossoff responded to the criticism, stating,
No one cares about their feelings.
He further elaborated,
It's been amazing to watch this White House melt down over this all week. And about Natalie Harp, these White House staffers are adults, public officials paid by the taxpayers with immense power in positions of public trust.
