New Study Reveals Top NFL Fanbases Across American Cities
A recent analysis by Nielsen delves into various metrics to determine which metropolitan areas exhibit the most dedicated support for their professional football teams.

The enduring debate among sports enthusiasts about which city or team boasts the most fervent fanbase has long been a topic of spirited discussion. In the realm of professional football, certain cities consistently come to mind for their intense devotion, such as Philadelphia, known for its Eagles supporters, or the strong dedication seen in East Coast cities like New York and Boston.
Chicago Bears fans, for instance, are renowned for filling the venerable Soldier Field even in harsh winter conditions, displaying unwavering loyalty despite the team's historical struggles. Similarly, in the Southern United States, particularly Texas, football holds a profound cultural significance, with high school games often drawing crowds in stadiums seating over 20,000 spectators.
Seeking to provide a definitive answer to this age-old question, Nielsen, a company primarily recognized for its television audience measurements, has released its new "Local NFL fandom index" report. Published on a Monday, the report examines all 30 NFL markets using eight key metrics to ascertain which cities are most deeply invested in their respective teams.
Understanding the Fandom Metrics
The metrics utilized in Nielsen's comprehensive study include:
- Apparel purchases
- General interest levels
- Live event attendance
- Betting intent
- Social media engagement
- Radio listenership
- Streaming habits
- Linear TV viewership
While the report specifies these criteria, it does not explicitly detail what constitutes "general interest levels" or how each metric was weighted to produce the final rankings.
A clear trend emerging from the data is that smaller or mid-market teams tend to foster the highest levels of fan engagement and interest. This outcome is not entirely unexpected, given the inherent advantages these markets often possess compared to larger urban centers.
Why Smaller Markets Often Lead in Fan Engagement
Smaller markets frequently dominate these rankings, partly due to less competition for residents' attention and leisure time. With fewer alternative entertainment options, particularly during the autumn and winter months in regions like the upper Midwest, local interest often converges more intensely on the NFL team.
Nielsen's report indicates that cities such as Cincinnati, Baltimore, Pittsburgh, and Cleveland achieved high scores because of the significant proportion of fans engaging through local radio broadcasts, television viewership, or attending games, relative to their market sizes. Local television viewership, in particular, is predictably higher in places like Cincinnati, Minneapolis, Pittsburgh, Green Bay, Buffalo, and Kansas City, compared to their larger counterparts.
Detroit and Green Bay were also highlighted for ranking among the top five in merchandise purchases. The recent successes of the Detroit Lions and the consistent performance of the Green Bay Packers have undoubtedly contributed to these figures.
Challenges for Larger Cities
Conversely, larger metropolitan areas or those with substantial transient populations generally exhibit lower fan engagement scores. NFL teams situated in Miami, Los Angeles, San Francisco, Tampa, and New York face stiff competition from a broader array of entertainment options. These cities also host large communities of residents from other parts of the country and are home to numerous teams across various professional sports, which can dilute singular focus on one NFL franchise.
Philadelphia's Unique Standing and the Impact of Winning
Despite the challenges inherent to a large market, Philadelphia Eagles fans earned commendation for their strong showing, ranking among the top five fanbases overall. Nielsen noted that while Philadelphia did not lead "a single metric outright," it secured a top-five position in "five of the eight questions the index tracks."
The study also underscores the significant role of team success in fueling fan passion. For example, Boston's ranking would likely be lower without the consistent excellence of the New England Patriots. Similarly, Kansas City surpasses other markets of comparable size due to the Chiefs' perennial status as Super Bowl contenders, largely attributed to quarterback Patrick Mahomes. Buffalo also clearly possesses a deeply passionate fanbase, and their top ranking is likely bolstered by the Bills' consistent playoff appearances with Josh Allen.
Consequently, while they may not always claim Super Bowl victory bragging rights, the Buffalo Bills' dedicated fanbase, often referred to as the Bills Mafia, can now point to this data to support their claim as one of the most passionate fanbases in the NFL.
