Michigan Senate Race Heats Up After Aide Compares GOP Campaign Video to 'KKK Cross Burning'

A recent campaign video released by Republican U.S. Senate candidate Mike Rogers in Michigan has ignited a contentious exchange following a staffer for his opponent, Abdul El-Sayed, making a controversial comparison.

Rogers unveiled a video on Sunday featuring himself in the passenger seat of a vintage red Ford pickup truck, which was adorned with two American flags on its tailgate. The footage shows Rogers smiling and waving as the truck moves along the road, set to the tune of Toby Keith's "American Ride." Accompanying the video online, Rogers' post declared, "Gotta love this American Ride! There’s no better way to do the Woodward Dream Cruise!"

However, Mason Pressler, who serves as a political manager for Abdul El-Sayed in northern Michigan, expressed strong disapproval of the video. El-Sayed is a progressive Democrat running against Rogers in the U.S. Senate race.

"Mike Rogers’ campaign has the aesthetics of a 1960s white flight suburb and a KKK cross burning," Pressler stated on X.

GOP Campaign Responds to Allegation

The Rogers campaign quickly seized upon Pressler's post, issuing a statement accusing him of believing that "driving a Michigan-made Ford truck is akin to the KKK." The campaign also added "Old Ford trucks" to what it described as a running list of items it claims El-Sayed dislikes.

Requests for further comment from El-Sayed's campaign regarding their aide's statement were not returned.

Scrutiny Over El-Sayed's Political Views

Abdul El-Sayed has previously faced scrutiny for his progressive political views, with some members of his own party reportedly finding his stances to be too far to the left.

During his campaign, El-Sayed has been seen campaigning and socializing with Hasan Piker, a socialist streamer. Piker is known for making controversial remarks, including stating that "America deserved 9/11," praising figures like Mao Zedong and Communist China, advocating for the killing of capitalists, and making a series of antisemitic comments.

Additionally, El-Sayed has previously argued against the Second Amendment in videos that were reportedly among 100 he later removed from public view on his YouTube channel. In an essay that later surfaced, he drew a comparison between former President Donald Trump and Osama Bin Laden.

Family Member's Legal Incident

El-Sayed's sister, Eman Abdelhadi, a professor at the University of Chicago and a socialist, was arrested last year. The arrest occurred during an anti-ICE protest outside the immigrant detention facility in Broadview, Illinois, where she was accused of spitting on a police officer.
