A family's routine search for seashells along the New Jersey coastline took an extraordinary turn when a father and son unearthed a fossilized tooth belonging to an ancient shark, estimated to be millions of years old.
Mike Bowers and his son, Bo Bowers, made the remarkable find on August 11 in Sea Isle City, near the Townsend Inlet. The fossil was identified as originating from an Otodus megalodon, a species recognized as the largest predatory shark in Earth's history, which became extinct approximately four million years ago.
Photographs of the tooth highlight its impressive scale and distinct dark, serrated edge. The fossil measures roughly the length of 11-year-old Bo Bowers' hand.
A Fortuitous Discovery on the Coast
Recounting the moment, Mike Bowers explained, "There was a rock jetty and a real nice looking beach. And I was like, well, let's go check it out." He initially spotted something intriguing within a small crevice between two rocks, but his hand was too large to reach it. He then called his son over to investigate.
The younger Bowers expressed his astonishment upon learning the tooth's age, stating it was "really hard to believe" that it was millions of years old. His father added that Bo "likes to look for shark teeth and stuff like that," but conceded that the family "definitely did not expect to find something of that stature."
Expert Confirmation and Rarity
On their journey home to western Pennsylvania, the family made a crucial stop at the New Jersey State Museum to have their discovery examined by specialists.
Mike Bowers detailed the experience: "[An official] took us up to the fossil lab, and he examined it and confirmed it." The expert definitively stated, "It 100% is a true megalodon tooth."
According to the museum official, this discovery marks only the sixth megalodon tooth ever recorded on New Jersey beaches. Mike Bowers noted that previous records indicated only five such fossils had been found in the state.
Ehret, an expert, elaborated on the scarcity of such finds in the region. "These teeth are highly uncommon in New Jersey because we do not have the right aged sediments preserved at or near the surface," Ehret explained.
Ehret also praised the condition of the recent find. "The Bowers tooth is in extraordinary good condition for a tooth from New Jersey. It reminds me of the teeth found in North Carolina, where they are much more common," he added. He contrasted this with typical New Jersey discoveries, noting, "Typically, teeth [found in New Jersey] are substantially worn from being in the water for long periods of time."
Young Explorers Unearthing History
This significant find by the Bowers family adds to a growing list of ancient discoveries made by young individuals in unexpected locations recently.
Earlier this year, an 11-year-old boy exploring a beach in England uncovered a tooth from an extinct relative of modern elephants, estimated to be approximately 1.8 million years old.
In another notable instance, an 8-year-old boy in Israel found a fragment of a 1,700-year-old Roman statuette and subsequently presented it during a school show-and-tell.
