Comedian Larry David reportedly demonstrated a playful reluctance to accept creative directives from former President Barack Obama during the production of their upcoming HBO series. This marks a unique instance where a former world leader's comedic timing and suggestions faced scrutiny from a seasoned humorist.
Jeff Schaffer, the director of "Life, Larry and the Pursuit of Unhappiness," a new HBO production from Barack and Michelle Obama’s Higher Ground Productions, shared details with Variety about how the acclaimed "Curb Your Enthusiasm" creator found himself engaging in a lighthearted power struggle with the former commander-in-chief.
Creative Clashes on Set
Schaffer recounted an exchange where Obama offered some creative input. David's response was reportedly a dismissive, "Yeah, yeah, yeah, we got it."
According to Schaffer, Obama quickly retorted with a reference to his presidential tenure.
"I spent half an hour talking about how funny everything is. I give you one note, and you get into a defensive crouch," Obama reportedly told David. He continued, "When I was in the Oval Office, I took advice and listened to my advisers, and I was the president of the United States."
In typical comedic fashion, David is said to have offered a swift and witty reply:
"Yeah, but I’m the president of this."
Schaffer also humorously speculated about the possibility of Obama leveraging his former executive authority on the set of the show.
"Using a presidential veto to get more money would have been amazing," Schaffer remarked to Variety. "I wish I’d thought of that. ‘The president needs an extra three days of shooting. He demands it.’ We should have done that."
About the New Series
"Life, Larry and the Pursuit of Unhappiness" is described as a sketch comedy miniseries designed to commemorate the nation's 250th anniversary. The show achieves this by comically satirizing various historical events throughout the United States' past.
Beyond David's starring role, the series features a rotating cast of prominent actors and political figures, including Barack Obama himself, Lin Manuel Miranda, and Jon Hamm, making appearances across the episodes.
A Longstanding Friendship
The collaboration on the series builds upon a long-standing friendship between David and the former president. Leading up to the show's premiere, Obama even playfully poked fun at the 78-year-old comedian in a promotional video for the production.
"I’ve sat across the table from some of the world’s most difficult leaders and wrestled with some of the globe’s most intractable problems," Obama stated in the video, adding, "nothing has prepared me for working with Larry David."
