Reports from last summer indicated that some within the Vikings organization harbored concerns regarding McCarthy's consistency, labeling his play as "unpredictable," according to a recent report. McCarthy had missed his entire rookie season in 2024 due to a knee injury, and his 2025 campaign was marked by uneven performances.
During the 2025 season, McCarthy completed 57.6% of his passes, throwing for 11 touchdowns against 12 interceptions across 10 games. The team achieved a 6-4 record during this period. Despite the winning record, these statistics reportedly led the Vikings to actively seek quarterback options during the most recent offseason.
A franchise quarterback is supposed to be the stability piece of a franchise. Like, you know what you’re getting every day. But with J.J., you weren’t sure which version you were going to get. I think he’s just still so young and may not have understood yet what that position fully entails and things like the consistency and day-to-day commitment.
There were even some within the organization who believed that Max Brosmer, an undrafted free agent who joined the quarterback room, should have started for Minnesota in Week 1 of the prior season.
