A resilient feline passenger recently completed an astonishing journey spanning hundreds of miles, inadvertently traveling from New Jersey to Georgia wedged beneath a vehicle. The small animal is now recovering following an intricate rescue operation conducted on a university campus.
The kitten, affectionately named Jersey by its rescuers, was discovered after the car arrived at the University of Georgia (UGA) campus. Sawyer, the individual who found the animal, promptly contacted the UGA Police Department. Officers, in turn, reached out to a local animal welfare nonprofit for assistance.
Bettinger, the founder of the nonprofit, along with fellow volunteer Lisa Donovan, responded to the call. Upon their arrival, they located Jersey tightly trapped in a confined space underneath the vehicle.
"I'll admit my heart dropped at first as I thought the kitten wasn't alive, but thankfully he cried and moved when I touched his leg," Bettinger recounted.
A Collaborative Rescue Effort
After initial attempts by police officers to extract the kitten proved unsuccessful, the vehicle was transported to a nearby Tires Plus service center. Mechanics there utilized a lift to raise the car and meticulously removed the front driver's side tire, which finally allowed rescuers to carefully pull Jersey free from his precarious position.
Following his liberation, the young cat was observed to be hot and panting, a clear sign of his ordeal. However, he quickly calmed down once placed in an air-conditioned environment and remarkably showed no immediate visible injuries.
Road to Recovery and a New Home
A comprehensive veterinary examination conducted the following day confirmed Jersey's overall good health. The only medical issues identified were a minor upper respiratory infection and coccidia, an intestinal parasite frequently observed in kittens born outdoors.
Initially, the small animal appeared timid around people, but Bettinger noted that he swiftly began to bond with his rescuers.
"He's now talkative, playful, likes to be held and really sweet," she shared, highlighting the kitten's rapid transformation.
According to an expert, cats possess an impressive ability to conceal themselves in remarkably small areas.
"Cats can hide in the smallest little places," Reimers stated. "If their head fits, their body will fit."
Reimers also offered an important safety recommendation for drivers, particularly in locations where outdoor cat populations are prevalent. She advised, "I always tell people, especially in the winter, but all year long, if you park your car outside before you start it, bang on the hood." This simple action can alert any hidden animals and prevent tragic accidents.
Jersey is currently residing in a foster home and has appointments scheduled for September 1 to be neutered, microchipped, and vaccinated against rabies.
In a heartwarming development, Sawyer's sister and her fiancé, who reside in New Jersey, have expressed their intention to adopt Jersey. This means the resilient kitten will eventually make a much safer and more comfortable return trip to the state where his extraordinary journey began.
"Now we have to figure out the logistics to get him back to New Jersey the first week of September, in a much safer and more comfortable way than as a stowaway," Bettinger explained, looking forward to Jersey's happy homecoming.
