Murder Suspect Captured After 45-Day Interstate Manhunt Following Discovery of Victim in Shallow Grave

Isabelle Johnson, a 38-year-old murder suspect, was taken into custody on Thursday, bringing an end to a 45-day, multi-state manhunt that encompassed Florida, Georgia, and Alabama.

Officials confirmed that a U.S. Marshals task force apprehended Johnson at a residence in Cottondale, Florida, approximately an hour west of Tallahassee, according to a statement from the Walton County Sheriff's Office.

Johnson was wanted on a murder charge stemming from the death of Jason Coulthart, whose remains were discovered buried in a shallow grave in Florida on June 25.

Details of the Arrest

Law enforcement officials reported that Johnson was arrested without incident on Thursday afternoon, concluding the extensive search. She was subsequently booked into the Jackson County Jail, where she awaits extradition to Walton County. Authorities indicated that additional charges might be filed.

The sheriff's office released a brief statement confirming the capture:

We got her. Isabelle Johnson is in custody.

The arrest was a direct result of intelligence gathered by the Walton County Sheriff's Office Cyber Crimes Unit regarding Johnson's location.

Jackson County Sheriff Donald Edenfield stated that upon receiving this critical information, deputies from his office, alongside members of the task force, responded to an address situated off Peanut Road, just outside Cottondale.

Inter-Agency Collaboration Praised

Chief Deputy Dustin Cosson of the Walton County Sheriff's Office commended the collaborative efforts among local, state, and federal law enforcement agencies, which were instrumental in Johnson's apprehension.

Cosson remarked,

It's absolutely a good day. It's really important, again, just want to stress to the public. She's here, she's in custody.

He further expressed profound appreciation for the dedication shown by investigators, stating,

We can't express the amount of appreciation for the work that's been done.

Cosson elaborated on the intensity of the investigation, noting that detectives invested "tons and tons of man hours" during the approximately 45-day search. He added that the broader inquiry has involved the issuance of more than 40 subpoenas and over 20 search warrants.

The Initial Disappearance and Discovery

Jason Coulthart was reported missing on May 24, after he was last observed departing the College Condominiums on East College Boulevard in Niceville.

During the missing person investigation, detectives developed leads that directed them to a property located off Sunset Lane in Freeport. Investigators secured a search warrant for the premises, which led to the discovery of Coulthart's body in a shallow grave on June 25, according to the sheriff's office.

Other Arrests and Ongoing Investigation

Five other individuals have been arrested in connection with the ongoing case. Michael Ray White, Kathleen Morris, Bobbi Wagstaff, Martin Leaverton, and Sandra Leaverton have all been charged with accessory to a capital felony after the fact.

Authorities indicated on Thursday that they anticipate further arrests as the investigation progresses.

During the period of the manhunt, the Walton County Sheriff's Office had characterized Johnson as "cunning" and a "master manipulator," issuing warnings to anyone who might be assisting her to cease such actions.
