This win marks the Fever's seventh in nine games, elevating them to the top spot in the Eastern Conference standings. While head coach Stephanie White captured attention with her pre-game remarks, her team ultimately delivered a compelling performance once play began.
Guards Kelsey Mitchell and Caitlin Clark were instrumental in the Fever's success. Mitchell ignited the offense early, contributing 20 of her game-high 28 points in the first half. Her backcourt partner, Clark, recorded an impressive double-double with 22 points and 10 assists.
Mitchell showcased exceptional shooting efficiency, converting 11 of her 16 field goal attempts. Both she and Clark, along with teammate Sophie Cunningham, each drained four three-pointers during the contest. Cunningham finished the game with 12 points, while Aliyah Boston added a significant presence in the paint, tallying 19 points and grabbing seven rebounds.
For the New York Liberty, Breanna Stewart and Sabrina Ionescu each led their team with 19 points. Jonquel Jones also contributed a double-double, recording 14 points and 10 rebounds.
Game Flow and Resurgence
In the third quarter, a temporary dip in Indiana's three-point shooting allowed New York to mount a comeback, narrowing the deficit to 66-57 with 6:51 remaining in the period. However, the Fever quickly regained its composure and momentum. Mitchell's crucial three-point play and Cunningham's timely three-pointer in the final minute of the quarter re-established a comfortable lead, pushing Indiana ahead 87-67.
Coach White Addresses Controversy
Prior to the game, Coach White addressed criticism she faced regarding her reaction to DiJonai Carrington's flagrant foul on Sophie Cunningham. She used her platform to advocate for unity within the league, urging a focus on the sport itself rather than ongoing peripheral controversies.
The hate, the fearmongering, the divisiveness that’s trying to hijack our league will not win. It won’t win. We are united. We are connected. We will not be divided. Every day these women put their ass on the line. Every day when they go low, we go high. Love will win. Grace will win. Humility will win and kindness will win. Following her impassioned statement, Coach White departed the press conference without taking any questions from reporters.
