James Carville Urges Democratic Socialists: 'Don't Use Our Goddamn Name'
Veteran Democratic strategist James Carville strongly criticized the far-left faction of his party, specifically telling "democratic socialists" to stop associating with the Democratic name.

Veteran Democratic strategist James Carville delivered a pointed rebuke to the progressive wing of his party during a recent video news conference.
"We get subjugated by some of the more outspoken people who, by the way, [are] not even Democrats," Carville stated. "I wish they'd take the word Democrat out of their name. I have no idea why the democratic socialists — if you hate the Democratic Party so much, well, then don't use our goddamn name. Go think of your own name."
Carville was among several speakers at a media event promoting the "Promise To America," a set of guiding principles developed in part by moderate House representatives Tom Suozzi of New York and Adam Gray of California. This initiative emerges as the Democratic Party navigates internal divisions over its core identity and policy direction.
A Platform for Core American Values
According to its official website, the "Promise To America" platform champions "capitalism, safety, fiscal responsibility, effective government, common purpose, and patriotism."
This initiative represents the latest effort by moderate and pragmatic members within the Democratic Party to distinguish themselves from the growing socialist movement, which has seen success in challenging and sometimes unseating established Democratic figures. The ongoing ideological struggle within the party has also become a significant talking point for Republican campaigns, who assert that Democrats intend to pursue a far-left agenda nationally if they achieve electoral victories in upcoming elections.
During the news conference, Carville emphasized that the principles outlined in the "Promise To America" are simply "common sense."
"That's so often what people are forgetting in politics. And for the life of me, I hope ... that we do things like this that are popular, are actually helpful, that can help the country. Who's not for lower crime? I mean, everybody is, but we just need to restate it," he explained.
He further contended that "80% of Democrats really want" what the "Promise To America" promotes, criticizing the far-left for overshadowing these more centrist viewpoints within the party.
Pledge Signatories and Party Leadership
Despite Carville's assertions, only 10 House Democrats have endorsed the pledge to date. Among the numerous Democratic candidates running for House seats, merely five have signed on. Republicans have highlighted these low numbers as evidence that the far-left truly holds sway within the party.
However, Representative Suozzi offered a different perspective on the limited number of congressional signatories. "We only want 10 members of Congress because we don't want to make it only about Washington. That's why we're going out to the state and local officials," he clarified.
Notably, senior leaders within the House Democratic caucus have not signed the pledge and have largely remained quiet regarding the socialist current within the party.
"I think the leadership is being very supportive," Suozzi remarked regarding his interactions with party leaders. "They have a lot to balance. They've got the whole country to worry about."
Representative Gray also commented on the broader political landscape, stating, "The efforts on the cable news networks and everything else to nationalize our politics all the time, pretend that, you know, somebody in some big city represents all of us is absurd. ... It's a distraction, this idea that somehow some leader somewhere is supposed to win my district."
