Canada Claims First World Cup Knockout Stage Win with Stoppage-Time Strike Against South Africa
Stephen Eustáquio's 92nd-minute goal propelled the Canadian side past South Africa in a closely contested Round of 32 match.

Canada secured a dramatic 1-0 victory over South Africa in their Round of 32 World Cup encounter on Sunday, marking a historic achievement for the North American nation. Despite entering the match as strong favorites, the Canadians faced a resilient South African defense, with the score remaining deadlocked until the final moments of regulation play.
The breakthrough arrived in the 92nd minute of second-half stoppage time. A Canadian cross into the penalty area was inadvertently headed by a South African defender, deflecting directly to the chest of midfielder Stephen Eustáquio. With composure, Eustáquio brought the ball down to his right foot and unleashed a powerful shot into the lower-left corner of the net, eluding South African goalkeeper Ronwen Williams.
Throughout the match, Canada consistently generated more offensive opportunities, registering seven shots on target compared to South Africa's solitary attempt. Furthermore, the Canadians held a significant advantage in expected goals, with a 1.32-0.13 ratio, underscoring their statistical dominance before Eustáquio's late winner.
Historic Milestone and Tournament Path
This pivotal goal not only sealed Canada's progression but also marked the country's inaugural knockout-match triumph at a World Cup. The momentous victory propels Canada into the Round of 16, a significant step forward for the national team.
Canada is one of the three co-hosts for the upcoming 2026 World Cup, alongside the United States and Mexico. While the Canadian squad played all three of its group stage matches on home soil, their Round of 32 clash against South Africa took place at Los Angeles Stadium in Inglewood, California. This away fixture was necessitated after Canada finished second in Group B, following a loss to Switzerland in their final group stage game.
Looking ahead, Canada is scheduled to face the winner of the match between the Netherlands and Morocco. This Round of 16 fixture will be held in Houston on July 4.
North American Co-Hosts Continue Their Journeys
Meanwhile, the United States, another co-host for the 2026 tournament, is also preparing for its Round of 16 challenge. Unlike Canada, the United States secured first place in its group. Team USA is set to compete against Bosnia and Herzegovina, the third-place team from Group B, on Wednesday, July 1, at San Francisco Bay Area Stadium in Santa Clara, California.
The U.S. team is widely considered a strong favorite to defeat Bosnia and Herzegovina, with odds of -700 at DraftKings suggesting a high probability of advancing to the next stage. Should the United States secure a victory, they would then face the winner of the match between Belgium and Senegal on July 6. With Canada having navigated its challenging opening knockout fixture, attention now turns to the United States as they aim to join their fellow North American co-host in the Round of 16.
