Trump-Backed Candidate Secures Arizona GOP Gubernatorial Nomination in Decisive Primary Win

Former President Donald Trump's significant influence within Republican primaries was affirmed Tuesday in Arizona, as his endorsed candidate secured the GOP nomination for governor.

Representative Andy Biggs, a former chairman of the House Freedom Caucus, decisively claimed the Republican gubernatorial nomination. With nearly 50% of the votes tallied on Tuesday night, Biggs had garnered over 70% of the total, as reported by the Associated Press, holding a lead exceeding 50% over his nearest rival.

Decisive Primary Victory

Biggs outpaced fellow Republican Representative David Schweikert, who received 17% of the vote at the time of the count. Other contenders included concrete pumping contractor Scott Neely, securing 7% in his second consecutive bid for governor, and business owner Ken Miceli, who garnered 5.4%.

General Election Showdown

Biggs is now set to compete against Democratic Governor Katie Hobbs in the general election. Governor Hobbs, formerly Arizona's Secretary of State, secured her party's renomination unopposed in the key southwestern battleground state. She previously defeated then-GOP nominee Kari Lake in a close contest for governor.

Contentious Campaign Trail

The Republican primary campaign was characterized by its contentious nature and significant expenditure. Earlier in the year, Representative Schweikert's campaign distributed mailers alleging that Biggs had associations with white supremacist and antisemitic organizations. In response, the Biggs campaign dismissed these claims as "a desperate tactic by our opponent."

Biggs, who also received endorsement from the political arm of the influential conservative organization Turning Point USA, largely chose to disregard his primary opponents. He participated in only one of the several scheduled debates.
