According to reports, a supporter identified as Santiago was responsible for bringing the banner into the venue. The banner itself was described as a hotel bedsheet, painted black with the slogan, which Santiago acquired for a nominal sum. His unconventional approach involved concealing the folded sheet within his clothing to bypass security checks.

"I folded it as much as I could, put it in my private parts to get through security checks, and in the end we managed to get in," Santiago recounted to Argentina's Todo Noticias.

Had the team not secured a win, the impact of such a statement — asserting ownership over islands where the majority of residents identify as British — would have been significantly diminished. In such a scenario, Santiago would have left Mercedes-Benz Stadium with the politicized bedsheet still concealed, its intended message unfulfilled.

The display of the banner provoked a strong negative reaction in the United Kingdom. Ed Davey, the leader of the UK Liberal Democrats, publicly condemned the act and called for disciplinary measures, specifically demanding that the players involved be prohibited from participating in the upcoming final match against Spain.
