93-Year-Old Soccer Referee Attributes Remarkable Stamina to Wartime Diet and Strict Discipline
At 93, veteran soccer official Frank Foster credits lifelong healthy habits, wartime diet, and strict discipline for his enduring stamina and commanding presence on the pitch.

At 93 years old, Frank Foster continues to be a vibrant presence on the soccer pitch, regularly issuing red and yellow cards and actively overseeing matches for his local association three times each week.
With a distinguished officiating career spanning 46 years and an estimated 5,500 games managed, the great-grandfather attributes his enduring vitality and match-day endurance to a lifetime of healthy practices and a foundational diet established early in life.
The Roots of Enduring Stamina
Foster points to the strict food rationing he experienced during his teenage years as a key factor in his exceptional physical condition. He noted that this period ensured he grew up consuming "healthy food" rather than indulging in "sweets and cakes."
Decades later, his routine for game days still centers on nutritious meals. He consistently begins his mornings with a bowl of oatmeal, cereal, or marmalade on toast, providing him with the necessary energy to officiate for the full 90 minutes.
This dietary regimen keeps him sufficiently active to manage games for men, women, and children alike – a passion he humorously suggests he will never conclude.
A Commitment to On-Field Discipline
His mental acuity and commanding presence during matches are as robust as his physical stamina.
A military veteran, Foster achieved an impressive 98% score on his referee examination in 1980. He relies on a traditional, disciplined approach to maintain control during games.
He holds the view that contemporary elite officials are excessively "soft," allowing player theatrics to detract from the sport. To uphold order and prevent misbehavior, he establishes clear guidelines before kickoff. He has zero tolerance for intimidation tactics or exaggerated diving.
"Those who go down like they have been shot, well, I would just book them," he stated firmly.
Foster is equally unwavering when teams attempt to surround him on the field.
"I wouldn't let them surround me at all," Foster explained. "I would say to the players, 'Stay where you are,' and 'If you move one more inch, I will give you a yellow card.' You need to stamp your authority and let them know who is in control."
Critiquing Modern Football
He also expresses skepticism about the modern practice of video assistant referee (VAR) technology, believing it introduces unnecessary "aggression and disappointment" over minute offside decisions.
"I think it spoils the game," he added. "Sometimes it is only the player's toe that is offside — it is ridiculous."
Foster admits he "never thought" he would still be officiating at 93, but he wholeheartedly embraces this opportunity.
He meticulously prepares his uniform, ensuring his kit is "neat and tidy" before every game.
A resident of South Yorkshire, England, Foster also cleans his black Adidas boots thoroughly after each match, making sure they are "nice and clean" for his subsequent fixture.
