The 2026 PGA TOUR season culminates this week with the TOUR Championship held at East Lake Golf Club in Atlanta, Georgia. Following a period from 2019-2024 where a "starting strokes" format was implemented and widely criticized by both fans and golfers, the current season marks the second year where all 30 competitors in the TOUR Championship field begin at even-par.
Looking ahead, new PGA TOUR commissioner Brian Rolapp recently announced a revised postseason structure set to debut in 2028. This upcoming format will feature the top 90 players competing in an initial stroke-play event, serving as the first round of the playoffs. From there, the top 32 will advance to a two-week, match-play TOUR Championship.
East Lake, a course designed by the legendary Donald Ross, spans 7,455 yards and plays as a par-70. It has been the consistent host of the TOUR Championship annually since 2004. The layout is characterized by its emphasis on driving, featuring wide fairways, demanding long approach shots, and swift Bermuda greens. This design particularly favors golfers who can achieve significant distance off the tee and follow up with precise iron play to create birdie opportunities.
Despite a challenging season for golf predictions, marked by a reported loss of -50.94 units (u) and a 4,133rd finish out of 5,297 entries in the Race for the Mayo Cup one-and-done league, with only one outright win (Nico Echavarria at the Cognizant Classic at +5900), the aim is to conclude the season positively. The following analysis identifies three players poised to potentially deliver strong performances this week.
The odds provided below reflect the time of initial wager and are subject to change.
Key Players to Watch at East Lake
Chris Gotterup
American golfer Chris Gotterup is currently priced at +2654 (0.75u) for an outright win and Top-10 with ties +124 (1u), both available at Kalshi. His valuation is considered favorable due to his adaptable game, which has proven successful across various course types and conditions. Over the past 13 months, Gotterup has secured four victories: the 2025 Genesis Scottish Open, the Sony Open in Hawaii, the WM Phoenix Open in Arizona, and the John Deere Classic in Illinois.
East Lake's design, which emphasizes driving distance over accuracy and features straightforward Bermuda greens, aligns well with Gotterup's strengths, according to analysis from Betsperts Golf. He ranks second in this field for Strokes Gained (SG): Off-the-Tee (OTT) and also second in driving distance over the last 30 rounds. Furthermore, Gotterup demonstrated strong putting performance last week at the BMW Championship, gaining over eight strokes on the greens en route to a T4 finish. Bermuda is noted as his most effective putting surface.
The favorable odds for Gotterup are attributed to his relatively lower profile compared to players higher on the oddsboard, such as Tommy Fleetwood (+1900), Patrick Cantlay (+1700), and Ludvig Åberg (+1450). However, his recent form suggests he is performing at a level comparable to, or even exceeding, these more prominent names, indicating significant value.
Hideki Matsuyama
Japanese star Hideki Matsuyama is listed at +3200 at DraftKings (0.63u) for an outright win and Top-10 with ties +146 at Kalshi (1u). Despite a T28 finish at the BMW Championship, where he was also backed for an outright win (+3000) and a top-10, Matsuyama's current odds are more attractive in this week's field, which has 20 fewer competitors. He ranks third in the Betsperts Golf model, trailing only World No. 1 Scottie Scheffler and Chris Gotterup.
The model incorporates various performance metrics relevant to East Lake and similar courses, including history, Bermuda putting proficiency, SG: OTT, approach shots from over 200 yards, and birdie-or-better rates. Over the last 24 rounds, Matsuyama stands second in the field for total scoring, SG: T2G (tee-to-green), and SG: Ball-striking (driving and approach), as reported by Betsperts Golf.
While his short game proved to be a weakness at the BMW Championship, Matsuyama consistently gained strokes with his driver for the seventh consecutive tournament and with his irons for the fourth straight, according to DataGolf.com. Historically, driving has been a challenging aspect of Matsuyama's game, and a rebound in his short game is anticipated given his renowned skill around the green. Although Matsuyama’s TOUR Championship history is not exceptional, with his best finish being T4 in 2018, the 2021 Masters champion is showing strong form, making his current odds compelling.
Russell Henley
American golfer Russell Henley is offered at +3500 (0.57u) for an outright win and Top-10 with ties +167 (1u), both at Kalshi. Several factors contribute to his favorable assessment. As a Georgia native who played collegiate golf at the University of Georgia, Henley possesses intimate knowledge of East Lake’s agronomy and the local playing conditions, including Atlanta’s characteristic hot and humid summer weather. He has consistently gained strokes on the greens in his last five starts, with Bermuda being his most effective putting surface.
Henley has also demonstrated improving performance in recent TOUR Championships, with finishes of T14 in 2023, T4 in 2024, and T2 last year. Data from DataGolf.com indicates that he has gained strokes across all aspects of his game—driving, approach, chipping, and putting—in the last two TOUR Championships, and tee-to-green (driving, approach, and around-the-green) in the last three.
Furthermore, Henley is often considered an undervalued player who is currently performing better than several golfers with shorter odds. His season includes a victory at the Charles Schwab Challenge in May, and he has maintained strong form since, not missing a cut in his subsequent seven starts, which includes a T9 finish at the British Open.
