A 43-year-old security professional in Venezuela was successfully extracted from the debris of a shopping complex on Thursday, having endured eight days trapped beneath the rubble. This remarkable rescue occurred following twin earthquakes that claimed over 2,200 lives in the nation.
Hernán Alberto Gil Flores was rescued from the basement of the Galerías Playa Grande shopping center, located in the coastal state of La Guaira. He had been stranded there since the intense seismic events struck on June 24.
"When we found him, he asked us not to tell his wife that he was alive, just in case he wouldn't make it," said Minyar Collado, a rescuer with the Costa Rican Red Cross, speaking to The Associated Press.
Rescue teams initially established contact with Gil Flores over the weekend after detecting indications of life deep within the fallen structure.
A Harrowing Ordeal and Remarkable Survival
Gil Flores was on an overnight shift when the initial earthquake hit. Although much of the building crumbled around him, his compact security booth remained largely intact, shielding him from falling concrete and creating a vital space for his survival.
His wife, Gusbimar González, shared how the family's deep despair transformed into renewed hope once rescuers confirmed her husband was alive. "When I learned he was alive, I saw a ray of light in the darkness," she told the AP. The couple are parents to two children, aged 8 and 10.
Footage from the scene depicted rescuers carefully carrying Gil Flores on a stretcher, draped with an orange tarp, through jubilant crowds. He was then loaded into a Red Cross ambulance. Members of the Costa Rican Red Cross were seen embracing each other in relief after the successful operation.
International Rescue Efforts Amidst Devastation
Rescue crews faced numerous challenges, including ongoing aftershocks, heavy rainfall, and precarious rubble, as they worked tirelessly to reach him. They utilized a telescopic camera to communicate with Gil Flores and managed to lower water and liquid nutrients through a narrow shaft, sustaining him during the final days of the rescue effort.
The complex rescue operation was spearheaded by Chilean firefighters, with crucial participation from search-and-rescue teams representing Costa Rica, the United States, Portugal, Mexico, and other nations.
The Galerías Playa Grande shopping center collapsed after two powerful earthquakes, measuring magnitudes 7.2 and 7.5, struck northern Venezuela on June 24. These seismic events caused extensive destruction, demolishing tens of thousands of buildings, resulting in over 2,200 fatalities, and injuring more than 11,000 people.
Gil Flores' extraordinary rescue provided a rare beacon of hope amidst days of widespread devastation. Just two days prior, on Tuesday, emergency workers had also successfully saved a 2-year-old boy who had been trapped under the rubble for six days.
In response to the disaster, the United States government has allocated $150 million in humanitarian aid to support Venezuela's recovery efforts.
